Grassroots Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This is a classification under the IRS tax code concerning charitable organizations. Many of our practices and much of what we can provide to candidates is determined in order to stay within the tax code rules and maintain our 501(c)(3) status. Below is a list of much of what we can and cannot provide. For a more detailed explanation of the limits of political participation for nonprofit organizations, please see the 2007 Revenue Rulings here.
What we do:
Help first-time candidates navigate the road to election
Target traditionally underrepresented and marginalized communities
Partner closely with community groups
Work with all parties including both Republicans and Democrats
Initiate lawsuits, as needed, to preserve candidates' right to ballot access and protect voters' right to a choice in elections
Provide support mechanisms for newly elected officials
Encourage accountability by providing newly elected officials with tools and resources to effectively reach and engage their constituents
What we do not do:
Endorse any candidates for office
Restrict access to any candidates
Circulate petitions/gather signatures for candidates
Campaign for candidates
Give preferential treatment to candidates because of their political views
Engage in issue campaigns or advocacy unless it pertains to areas such as ballot access and electoral reform
